So it's been a few days since my last post and I apologise. It's been a busy few days (which is not unusual). Jensen had his vaccinations on Saturday as they were considering taking him off Optiflow and putting him onto low flow (which you can go home on). Vaccinations need to be given while on respiratory support, should the bubs require assistance and have a reaction to the jabs, so we went ahead on Saturday. Turns out mummy was worried about nothing, little man coped very well. His oxygen requirement didn't go up, nor did he get a temperature or flu like symptoms. So yay! That's done with.
24 hours later and little man is on Low flow. This is just a bit of oxygen, no pressure to help inflate his lungs, just a bit of air. He started on 70mls, quickly moving down to 40mls and he now hovers between 20 and 30. The lowest you can go is 10mls, and babies can go home and often do, on oxygen. Once again he is the talk of the NICU with everyone being very impressed with his progress. Next stop is Low Dependency, but currently there are no beds available....
Yesterday Jensen had his first proper bath, thank goodness...as he had been smelling a little like bacon after not bathing in so long...a little salty piece of bacon he was. After the initial 'please don't undress me' protest, he seemed to really enjoy it, and looked very cute.
Today he weighed in at 1777grams. His weight gain is slow and steady and needs to be a little more, but as he is now working hard sucking to feed himself, he is burning more calories. If only we could all lose weight just by feeding ourselves!
As Jensen is now doing so well on low flow, he has been taken off the intensive care charts and is having third hourly observations rather than hourly. This is just where they note his saturation levels, heart rate, and respiratory rate. Another indication he is ready for Low Dependency.
Over the weekend a few of my wonderful girlfriends organised a baby shower for me. It was a lovely afternoon catching up with everyone briefly, and a nice escape from the walls of the hospital. Unfortunately the weather has been terrible so the initial location at a Harbourside park was relocated to my friend Trudy's mother's house, who so kindly offered and welcomed us all into her home for the afternoon. I'd like to say thank you to everyone for coming, and for spoiling us with your company and lovely gifts. I'd like to also say a massive thank you to Trudy, Lucy and Mel for spending so much time and effort in the organisation of such an event, and also to Sue for lending us her home. We are truly blessed to have so many wonderful friends and family, and thank everyone for following along with us through our journey.
